 A Pastel Painting of Hastings  Marina

It was a glorious spring morning with a clear blue sky and wispy white clouds.

Tee -shirt weather for most but a long sleeved windcheater and goose bumps for me.

On a whim, I decided to drive to the Westernport Marina at Hastings (around 10 or so minutes from home) and parked in the sprawling, almost empty car park.

As is so often the case, I found being in the company of boats and yachts quite exhilarating. It was a place where I could lose myself.

A light breeze tinkered with the rigging, reminding me of the sound of wind chimes. It was like being in another world, a world I find inspiring, particularly in relation to painting.

As I rounded the path leading towards the chandlery, I was stopped in my tracks.

The scene before me was simply magical. The colours, that I could see, together with the inverted images of the boats in water were intoxicating. I had never before seen such perfect reflections. I stood transfixed for who knows how long and captured the image on my camera, in my mind and on my sketch pad.

Every time I look at this painting I am reminded of that day and how exciting it was to quite literally stumble upon such a perfect scene. It was as if the whole display had been prepared just for me – a glorious natural canvas awaiting my arrival.

Reflections will always remain one of my very favourite paintings.

Happily the original sold recently, when it was on display at Somers General Store and I can only hope it has found a good home and that its new owners will enjoy and appreciate the image that I discovered and created as much as I did.
