Waiting by Emily Holsman

From: $98.26

I had just watched this beautiful animal rolling on the beach at Balnarring – legs and sand flying off in all directions. He clearly enjoyed himself, as afterwards it took considerable encouragement from his rider to get him into ‘work’ mode.

Description

Pastel painting of a racehorse standing on Balnarring Beach by award winning Australian artist Emily Holsman.

Waiting

It was a chilly morning but the weather forecast was promising. We could expect a fine, sunny day with a light breeze.

I had already walked the dogs and after donning layer upon layer of clothing, I left the house with my camera, gloves, beanie and yet another jacket.

The drive to the stretch of Balnarring Beach where the racehorses train is easy enough, but negotiating the teeth rattling potholes in the car park is not.

With a 9.00am curfew for horses on the beach, there was a great buzz of activity. Horses, riders, vehicles and floats were heading in all directions. It was such a contrast to other times of day (particularly in the off season) when the car park is often empty and its surrounds peaceful.

I strolled along the sandy path leading to the beach with my camera in hand and looked out to sea. The water was so calm and peaceful, just as the sun was rising over Westernport Bay.

I began my trek through the dunes (taking numerous photos), all the while trying not to spook the horses. Some were cantering along the sand, while others waded in the shallows.

It was a lovely way to start the day but before long I was ready to return home.

I had almost reached the entrance to the path when the sight of a beautiful horse playfully rolling in the sand (legs flying every which way) stopped me in my tracks. I laughed with delight, watching as a mini sand storm erupted when the horse stood up and shook himself off.

For a moment he just stood there quietly, staring into the distance, seeming to relish the sensation of his early morning massage before his handler gently led him away.

This wonderful animal became the subject of my painting ‘Waiting.’
