Tranquillity

David had bought the original painting of ‘Tranquillity’ when it was on exhibit at one of the local galleries.

It was one of the very first paintings I ever sold and I can remember how thrilled and delighted I was that it had found its way to such a good home.

I captured the image while walking on the beach at Balnarring and can recall being struck by the wonderful way the early morning light was reflecting from the water and bathing the timber hull of the tiny row boat that was moored just off shore.

It was like looking at a floating rainbow, the way the colours transformed each time the boat gently bobbed and swayed in the current.

I was very surprised to get a phone call from David several months later. I was even more surprised to hear what he had to say. ‘Tranquillity’ had been destroyed in a house fire and was there any way I would agree to re-create the image and do another painting for him.

I felt very sad at its loss, as every painting is an expression of me – an extension of my soul. On the other hand, I was buoyed by the opportunity to create the image again, so I said yes.

From the outset it was very important to me to avoid looking at any photos of the original painting. I wanted to create a new image that was fresh, authentic and from the heart.

It’s always nerve racking presenting a commissioned work to a client and I explained my motivation and process to David when I met with him to hand over the finished painting.

I think this was something he very much appreciated and happily we both agreed that the new painting was at the very least the equal of the original.
